TAISEN Short Grip – Kotō-Style Madake Bamboo Shinai
The TAISEN Short Grip is a Kotō-style shinai with a shorter handle design.
The short-grip design brings the balance closer to the hands, providing smooth and effortless handling.
Favored by experienced practitioners and high-ranking kendoka, it’s suitable for keiko, tournaments, and grading exams.
Made from selected heavier Madake bamboo, each piece is crafted with a thicker shave (tatsumen-kezuri) for a solid feel and bold appearance.
The grip thickness is φ26 mm, which is our standard size.
Comes with the official “SSP” sticker, meeting All Japan Kendo Federation standards.
*The grip is approximately 2–3 cm shorter than a standard size 39 shinai.
●Shinai Styles
・Standard Shinai
Neutral balance. The most common type, suitable for all levels.
・Dobari Shinai
Weight near the handle. Best for quick, fast strikes and competition.
・Koto Shinai
Weight is distributed across the whole shinai, centering toward the middle. Favored by experienced players for powerful, solid impact.

(Weights are approximate and may vary due to natural bamboo. Please note: 38-size women’s approx. 420 g is for high school girls’ division in Japan and cannot be used in general adult women’s competitions.)
●Care & Maintenance
・Store in a shinai case, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
・We recommend using both a shinai bag and the protective plastic cover provided at purchase.
・A tsuba (guard) and tsuba-dome (rubber stopper) are required for practice (sold separately).
・Check your shinai frequently during practice for splinters or cracks. Replace immediately if damage is found.
・Long-term storage may cause bamboo to dry, discolor, or become brittle. Avoid using an aged shinai.
・Over time, bamboo may dry out and slightly lose weight.
・The nakayui (leather tie) and tsuru (string) may loosen with use. Regular maintenance is recommended.

・Each kendo equipment and uniform brand follows its own design standards, so slight differences may exist even with the same size specifications.
・Product color and texture may appear slightly different depending on your device and viewing environment.
