【-SAI-】Kendo Bogu Set – 6mm Machine Stitch
It is a Kendo Bogu Set consisting of Men (helmet), Do (chest protector), Kote (gloves), and Tare (waist protector).
*The Kendo Bogu Set will be shipped within 7 to 10 business days.
Key Features:
Durable Materials: The primary striking areas of the Men (helmet) and Kote (gloves) are made with strong, indigo-dyed Orizashi fabric. This traditional woven cotton is highly durable and suitable for rigorous training.
MEN Reinforced Design:
The top of the Men (forehead area) is slightly thicker to absorb impact more effectively.
The Men’s padding is firm yet flexible, providing both durability and comfort.
Synthetic leather is used for the Men’s throat protector and the borders of the Men, Kote, and Tare. This material is sweat- and water-resistant, and easier to maintain than traditional deerskin.
Duralumin Mengane:
The Men grill is made from duralumin (a strong aluminum alloy), which is lightweight and sturdy. While titanium grills are used in high-end models, duralumin offers an excellent balance of strength, lightness, and cost.
Kote (Gloves):
Simple and classic in structure. Reinforced Orizashi fabric is used on high-impact areas like the knuckle and forearm. The wrist area is slightly thicker for shock absorption. The palm (Tenouchi) is made of synthetic leather, a common choice over traditional deerskin due to ease of care.
Do (Chest Protector):
Finished in classic black with a resin-based Do-dai (main panel). The Mune (upper chest panel) features a traditional “Kumo Kazari” (cloud pattern), specifically the “Hon-Kumo S-shape” design. While premium models may use lacquered bamboo, over 90% of modern Do use resin for durability and cost-effectiveness.
Tare (Waist Protector):
Designed with a 6mm straight machine stitch and a five-line decorative pattern (“Godan Kazari”) hand-sewn by skilled craftsmen. This stitching allows flexibility and protection without hindering lower body movement.
“Kumo Kazari” also refers to decorative enhancements used not only on the Do but also on the Men, Kote, and Tare — a way to customize the appearance of your gear.
●Takeshima’s Recommendation
The original “SAI” Kendo Bogu set by Takashima Budogu is ideal for both beginners and advanced practitioners seeking affordable, reliable gear.
The name “SAI” (最) means “excellent” in Japanese — a wish for your continued improvement in kendo.
Stitched at a 6mm width, this is considered the modern standard for both durability and usability.
Narrower stitches (e.g., 3mm) tend to be stiffer and less flexible, while wider stitches (e.g., 8–10mm) are softer but more prone to wear.
A 5–6mm width offers the best balance for a wide range of users and training environments.
Maintenance Tips
①Dry Properly:
After use, shape the Men and Kote, then air-dry them in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading and material degradation.
②Avoid Folding Men Flaps:
Let the Men-dare (ear flaps) hang naturally or store them properly to maintain their shape.
③Maintain Kote Shape:
Smooth out the wrinkles in the Tenouchi and reshape the Kote to maintain its original form.
④Wipe Sweat and Oils:
Clean the inner Men padding, especially around the chin area, where sweat accumulates.
If salt or sweat residue appears white on the surface, gently mist with water or wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid rubbing too hard, especially on indigo-dyed areas, as it can cause discoloration.
⑤Soften the Kote Head:
Over time, sweat can harden the glove. Before use, gently knead the Kote to restore softness for a better fit.
●Notes
・Each Kendo equipment brand manufactures its products based on its own unique design philosophy and standards. As a result, even if the size specifications are the same, there may be slight differences in details such as the thickness of the men-shin (helmet padding), the shape of the do (chest protector), or the length of the kote (gloves).
・The Orizashi fabric used in this set is dyed overseas. While it offers a beautiful shade of indigo, please note that there may be subtle differences in tone and texture compared to high-end Japanese-made fabrics.
・Indigo-dyed fabrics may initially transfer color to the skin or clothing. This will gradually fade with continued use.
・The outer fabric is made from 100% cotton and is similar to the thick material used for kendogi (Kendo uniforms). Two main fabric types are commonly used in Kendo armor:
Orizashi: A woven-textured cotton fabric.
Kon-tan: A smoother, tighter-woven fabric, typically used for hakama.
・Due to differences in devices and viewing environments, the color and texture of the product may appear slightly different from the actual item. Thank you for your understanding.
