UNSUI – Kotō-Style Japanese Madake Shinai
The UNSUI is a Kotō-style shinai, designed with its balance point near the center.
It provides a solid, weighty feel, allowing for powerful and well-controlled strikes.
Preferred by experienced practitioners and high-ranking kendo players, it’s ideal for keiko, shiai, and grading exams.
Crafted from domestically grown Japanese Madake bamboo, each piece is carefully processed and dried in Japan to maintain strength and consistency.
This shinai offers the firm, durable quality that many kendoka appreciate.
Comes with the official “SSP” sticker, meeting All Japan Kendo Federation standards.
The word “Unsui” (雲水) refers to a Zen trainee monk — symbolizing discipline, focus, and spiritual training.
●Shinai Styles
・Standard Shinai
Neutral balance. The most common type, suitable for all levels.
・Dobari Shinai
Weight near the handle. Best for quick, fast strikes and competition.
・Koto Shinai
Weight is distributed across the whole shinai, centering toward the middle. Favored by experienced players for powerful, solid impact.

Size 38: 117 cm – Men: approx. 480 g | Women: approx. 420–440 g
Size 39: 120 cm – Men: approx. 510 g | Women: approx. 440 g
(Weights are approximate and may vary due to natural bamboo. Please note: 38-size women’s approx. 420 g is for high school girls’ division in Japan and cannot be used in general adult women’s competitions.)
●Care & Maintenance
・Store in a shinai case, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
・We recommend using both a shinai bag and the protective plastic cover provided at purchase.
・A tsuba (guard) and tsuba-dome (rubber stopper) are required for practice (sold separately).
・Check your shinai frequently during practice for splinters or cracks. Replace immediately if damage is found.
・Long-term storage may cause bamboo to dry, discolor, or become brittle. Avoid using an aged shinai.
・Over time, bamboo may dry out and slightly lose weight.
・The nakayui (leather tie) and tsuru (string) may loosen with use. Regular maintenance is recommended.
