KOKORO Indigo-Dyed Single-Layer Kendo Gi
A lightweight, traditional Kendo uniform ideal for training and tournaments
Product Overview
The KOKORO Kendo Gi is a perfect entry point into the world of traditional indigo-dyed uniforms. While jersey-style uniforms have become the mainstream, this gi offers a return to the origins of Kendo—a must-have for those who value authenticity.
●Specifications
・Material: 100% Cotton
・Dye: Authentic Indigo Dye
・Fabric: Single-layer Orizashi (no inner lining)
・Sizes: 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5
Color: Deep Indigo (Note: Fabric is dyed overseas)
Lightweight & Durable: Made from single-layer Orizashi fabric—strong yet light, commonly used in Kendo equipment. Easier to move in and highly breathable.
Highly Absorbent: The natural cotton material provides excellent sweat absorption, perfect for intense training sessions.
A Kendo Gi That Grows with You: As you wear it, the fabric gradually softens and molds to your body. The indigo dye will naturally fade over time, giving it a personalized, aged beauty unique to each wearer.
Authentic Appearance: While dyed overseas, the fabric still achieves a rich, deep indigo look. It may not match the depth of Japan-dyed fabrics, but it maintains a high level of traditional aesthetic.
Shrinkage Notice: As it’s made of cotton, some shrinkage will occur after washing. Gently stretch it while drying to maintain shape.
●Maintenance
・Hand washing is recommended, using only water or a mild non-fluorescent detergent.
・Machine washing is possible but must be followed by drying in the shade in a well-ventilated area.
・Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods as it may cause fading or degradation of the indigo.
・Do not use a tumble dryer.
Indigo dye will transfer to skin and other garments in the beginning. This is a natural trait of authentic indigo and should be embraced as part of the experience.
Please do not attempt to “wash out” the dye. Let it fade gradually through regular use.
●Takeshima’s Recommendation
Today, most children start Kendo wearing jersey-style uniforms. However, at Takeshima Budogu, we always recommend experiencing indigo-dyed Kendo gi at least once. It’s a deeply rooted element of Kendo tradition.
The KOKORO gi is ideal for your first indigo-dyed uniform. Though it requires more care than synthetic materials—such as color transfer or special washing—it also connects you to the heritage of Kendo.
If you’re someone who appreciates tradition and wants to experience Kendo in its original form, this gi is for you.
Enjoy how the rich indigo evolves with time—this is the true charm of indigo dye.
●Notes
・Each Kendo equipment and uniform brand manufactures its products based on its own unique design philosophy and standards.
Therefore, even if the size specifications are the same, there may be slight differences in details such as the thickness of the men-shin (inner padding of the helmet), the shape of the do (chest protector), the length of the kote (gloves), or the overall fit of each uniform.
・Due to differences in devices and viewing environments, the color and texture of the product may appear slightly different from the actual item. Thank you for your understanding.
